A South That Innovates and Produces | Volume 11 | The Manufacturing Sector of Southern Italy in the Current Geoeconomic Context. Interdependencies and Competitiveness

This study aims to address key issues for the development of the region’s production system considering emerging challenges and opportunities within the global competitive landscape.

The analysis highlights how businesses are adapting to transformations in the Global Value Chain (GVC). These shifts introduce a completely new perspective, with significant implications for the competitiveness of various regions, particularly Southern Italy. Concurrently, evolving geopolitical dynamics, coupled with new growth trajectories such as sustainability and the digital and technological transition, are redefining the traditional boundaries of industrial supply chains. This study examines the major transformations within these sectors, focusing on the so-called 4A+Pharma industries (Aerospace, Agrifood, Automotive, Apparel, and Biopharmaceuticals), in which Southern Italy has a strong specialisation.

In recent times, multiple crises – ranging from war and raw material shortages to inflationary pressures and rising interest rates – have led to a reassessment of geoeconomic balances, a redefinition of globalisation processes for both people and goods, and the emergence of new production models. However, the fundamental objectives—environmental, technological, and security-related—remain unchanged. This underscores the importance of a thorough analysis of the current key factors and trajectories on the growth path of Southern Italy's manufacturing sector.

This premise forms the basis of the new study, The Manufacturing Sector of Southern Italy in the Current Geoeconomic Context: Interdependencies and Competitiveness, which aims to address key issues for the development of the region’s production system considering emerging challenges and opportunities within the global competitive landscape.
